About

We are pleased to announce the 2nd Blockchain in Construction Research Workshop, hosted by Robert Gordon University in collaboration with the Construction Blockchain Consortium. The workshop will take place on Thursday 15th and Friday 16th April 2021 online.

The first day will feature a practical step by step implementation of Solidity smart contracts for CAD systems (Rhino/Grasshopper). The second day will include research discussions and seminars. More information, including an agenda, will follow.

Blockchain in a construction context is an important and emergent research subject with an increasing number and quality of publications but also one which receives significant industry attention. The virtual workshop hosted by Robert Gordon University’s Centre for Digital Cities and Society, in collaboration with the Construction Blockchain Consortium, aims to connect active researchers to develop further thinking and innovative approaches to the area. We are seeking presentations of up-to-date research to enable a wide and deep discussion on future research agendas and open pathways for potential collaborations.

The workshop will invite discussion based on the research presentations. Further, we hope presentations by blockchain researchers, developers and practitioners will inspire new research perspectives and directions. A particular aspect of the workshop will focus on developing a map of research questions and methods that can help the global community advance the state of the art.

  • Google Calendar ICS

We are pleased to announce the Digital Construction Management Workshop, hosted by ETH Zurich in collaboration with the CBC. The workshop will happen on the 20th and 21st of February 2020 at ETH Zurich Campus.

Blockchain in a construction context is an emerging research topic which has seen increasing industry attention and greater numbers of publications about it in recent years. This small workshop hosted by the Chair of Industrial and Innovative Construction, in collaboration with the Construction Blockchain Consortium, aims to connect actively involved researchers to develop thinking in this area. We are seeking presentations of up-to-date research to facilitate the discussion about future research agendas and open pathways for potential collaborations.

The workshop will invite discussion based upon the research presentations. In addition, we hope external presentations from blockchain researchers outside of construction inspire new research directions. The event is hosted in a relaxed atmosphere at ETH Zurich with social activities (including a tour of NCCR digital fabrication) and dinner on the 20th of February to facilitate new relationships and networking.

Further information can be found on the ETH Zurich website [here].

ABOUT THE CBC SEMINAR SERIES

The CBC's seminars are strategic, tailored events dealing with topical themes and challenges in the construction industry. The series explores the potential disruption and applications of DLT and blockchain in the built environment. The events bring together leading industry and academic practitioners of the field to share and debate new knowledge.

ABOUT THE CBC

The Construction Blockchain Consortium was established to develop knowledge transfer, arrange commercial and academic presentations, assess and test commercial services and technology, conduct research, and drive policy, regulation and understanding of the consequences of Blockchain and other emerging technologies in the Built Environment. CBC is led by the UCL Department of Computer Science and the The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment.

We also investigate the development of open source tools on behalf of the industry and to encourage application developers to build proprietary technology and services to deliver sustainable construction solutions.

CBC Seminar - Algorithms & the Law

Details: Room 3.21, Old Building, LSE, London

Speaker: Jeremy Barnett (Resilience Partners Limited and Construction Blockchain Consortium). Joint work with Adriano Soares Koshiyama and Philip Treleaven.

Abstract

The BARAC project defines feasibility guidelines to policy makers,
industry and regulators by identifying problems and associated
solutions with a bottom up approach, built through case studies
and proof of concept platforms.

In Law a company is treated as having the rights and obligations of a person. In this era of Artificial Intelligence (intelligent assistants, ‘Robo’-advisors, robots, and autonomous vehicles) ‘algorithms’ are rapidly emerging as artificial persons: a legal entity that is not a human being but for certain purposes is considered by virtue of statute to be a natural person. Intelligent algorithms will increasing require formal training, testing, verification, certification, regulation, insurance, and most importantly status in law.

For example, already in financial services Regulators require firms to demonstrate that trading algorithms have been thoroughly tested, demonstrate ‘best execution’ and are not engaged in market manipulation. Other interesting cases are healthcare algorithms; medical-assistant’ Chatbots and patient screening systems which will increasingly dispense medical advice and treatments to patients. Regulators, who have traditionally regulated firms and individuals, are raising the status of ‘algorithms’ to ‘persons’.

This paper discusses the emergence of ‘Algorithms as artificial persons’, with the need to formally verify, certify and regulate algorithms. Its aim is to start discussion in the Legal profession regarding the legal impact of algorithms on firms, software developers, insurers, and lawyers. This paper is written with the expectation that the reader is familiar with ‘Law’ but has a limited knowledge of algorithm technologies.

Jeremy Barnett is a practising Barrister, Recorder and director of Resilience Partners Limited. He is a Director of the Construction Blockchain Consortium (CBC) at UCL and has conducted research into algorithmic dispute resolution and the law of algorithms over a number of years. For 5 years he was the visiting professor of Law Informatics at Leeds University where he lead the Court 21 project, a research group in virtual courts.

Somerset House East Wing

Strand, LONDON, WC2R 2LS

06 October 2017 - 14:00 -17:30

Smart Contracts are automated computer protocols intended to facilitate, verify, or enforce the negotiation or performance of a contract. They are becoming increasingly sophisticated with the advent of blockchain cryptocurrency tools like Bitcoin Script, Ethereum Solidity and others.

As one of the leading research establishments in the field, the Centre of Construction Law & Dispute Resolution, Dickson Poon School of Law, King’s College London will be discussing the complexities of the emerging field of Smart Contracts and its interfaces with Artificial Intelligence (AI), Building Information Modelling (BIM) and the challenges posed by the construction industry and its legal framework.

CBC Seminar - BIM & Blockchain

The CBC was established to develop knowledge transfer, arrange commercial and academic presentation, assess and test commercial services and technology, conduct research, and drive policy, regulation and understanding of the consequences of blockchain and other emerging technologies in the Built Environment.

We also wish to investigate the development of open source tools on behalf of the industry, to encourage application developers to build proprietary technology and services to deliver sustainable construction solutions.

The first step is to consider how Building Information Modelling (BIM) can interface with Blockchain and the Internet of Things (IoT) to encourage the continued growth of the UK’s world class capability in architecture, design and engineering.

This will be an informal workshop where members of the CBC technical group will talk about their perspectives on the project, and a systems requirement can be defined in conjunction with participants at the event.
